Esq. MTR-2/2 Notes: The court roll of the lordship of Usk in 1570 recorded George ap Probert, esq, as one of several free tenants in the manors of Trergeiroc and Llanvayr at Llanishen. George ap Robert also held Glanolwye, and lands late of Jenkin ap Hywel ap Ieuan (1395), and lands named Tyr Pont Jenkyn (Jenkin's Bridge House). MTR-2/2 (Although George is listed as being the son of Robert and not Walter, it is highly likely that this was George Probert (1540), particularly given George's possession of lands belonging to his great-great grandfather - Jenkin.) Notes: The manor of Pilston, also known as Tal-y-van, was held by the lords of Usk and Trelech by a quarter of a knight's fee. William ap John ap Perkin, descended from Sitsyllt, prince of Meirionydd, came from north Wales in the 16th century and married Jane, the daughter and heir of Madog ap Robert of Pilston. His descendants, known as Perkins, continued to own the estate until the end of the 18th century. In a rent-roll of the manor of Usk in 1570, George ap Robert of Pant-glas held freely lands in Llandogo, late of Walter ap Robert, in the occupa- tion of Christopher Perkin, at the rent of a red rose. "To my sister Florence 20 l.-- "William Probert my son and heir, ex'or "My cousin Thomas...and my brother Charles Probert, overseers." MTR-2/2 Notes: When he died, Dafydd Benwyn wrote the following elegy: "Aeth eryr, haul a tharian Y Pantglas ym hob hynt glan. Maestr Siors mai eisiau drwy'r sir, Maeddwyd yr holl genedl meddir. "Marw Siors ymroy sy rhaid, Mawr anhap, mawr i weiniaid, Llew Water canllaw ydoedd. Llew doeth dros yr holl wlad oedd, Hil Robert hael or hoyw barth, Waed rial bual barth. Master George is missed throughout the country, The whole nation is distressed. That George is dead we might be resigned, A very great disaster to the poor, Walter the lion was their support. He was a wise lion over the whole country, The race of Robert the generous, gay, and alert, The real blood of the region of the bulls. The tall stag is laid in the fair vault And our ruler is at Trelech.) MTR-2/2 Notes: The reference to the bulls is probably drawn from the coat of arms of George's mother Dorothy (nee Baynham) (1490) which depicts a chevron between three bull's heads. MTR-2/2 B1540 ? Before the Norman invasion that blurred the distinction between local divisions, the chief royal residence of the county was Talgarth where Brychan may have resided. Trecastell was another important stronghold in the kingdom of Brycheiniog; the third was Ystrad Yw in the SE corner of the kingdom. The principal saint of region was Cynog, son of Brychan, who suffered martyrdom; he is buried at Merthyr Cynog. Glasbury was named for a grandson of Brychan. Llangorse was an ecclesiastical centre. Talgarth fell under Norman control in 1088 when Rufus took control of Talgarth and Glasbury. (Source: Lloyd, JE. A History of Wales From the Earliest Times to the Edwardian Conquest. London: Longmans, Green & CO., 1912. Notes: TALGARTH AREA Talgarth, "the head or front of the hill," is where the western ascent to the Black Mountain begins. It is located on the river Enig, 9 ½ miles NE of Brecon. The river divides the village. The pop of the parish in 1901 was 1,466; fifty years before it was 1,388 of which 670 resided in the borough. Inside Talgarth: - a small turret near the church had been used to confine offenders within the borough. - the embattled wall of Porthamel, half a mile from Talgarth church, is in the valley leading to a farmyard. It was once the entrance to the estate of Sir William Vaughan, the first sheriff of Breconshire. The mansion with the property amounted to about 2,000 pounds a year. - fairs well-attended by drovers and dealers of horses, cattle and pigs were held: 2 Feb, 12 Mar, 18 Apr, 31 May, 10 Jul, 23 Sep, 2 Nov & 3 Dec. - the church is dedidated to St Gwendoline (Gwenfrew, daughter of Brychan, prince of Breconshire.) The church tower is early 15th C. The six bells are dated 1724. Under the communion table are grave- stones to the memory of the Prossers & Gunters of Trevecca. (John Gunter of Trevecca, Esq, who died in 1689, was married to Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Goode of Willocksbridge, Hereford by whom he had three sons and three daughters.) On painted boards is a list of the following benefactions: (1) Thomas Watkin Probert, gent. gave by deed bearing date 1663 to the poor of the parish of Talgarth, forever, ten pounds, to be paid on Tuesday next before Easter, chargeable upon an estate or estates in the several parishes of Llangorse and Talgarth, called Cenvydd and Cefn Eithin, containing by estimation almost eighty acres." (2) John Gunter, Esq, gave to the poor of the parish of Talgarth an alms- house for four inhabitants, with a small garden for each, situate in the borough of Talgarth. (The tablet once fixed to the front of the Gunter Almshouses has been taken down. They are now freeholds.) (3) Also Thomas Bennet of Pen-yr Wrlodd, Walter Williams of Newadd Fach, Mrs Sybil Williams of Trevithel. (Thomas Watkin Probert's Charity - 10 pounds paid yearly and distributed about Easter, and Sybil Williams' 1 pound yearly is likewise distributed. Thomas Harris' charity has not been paid since 1880.) Outside Talgarth: - a cromlech is located in a field on the left-hand side of the road from Talgarth called Croes Lechau, about 2 miles east of Talgarth in the parish of Brynllys. The farm is called Bryn y Groes. - a Druidical stone circle, used as a place of worship, as a court of justice, and finally as a place to select rulers, is located on a hill called the Gadair (chair). - ruins of the Castle of Drinas, located where it could defend the pass from Talgarth to Crickhowell is located on a hilltop a mile from Blan Leveni. - the lunatic asylum, opened in 1903, was built to hold 350-500 patients.
